Spending extra cash on quality headpones is a must, just like going the extra mile for good car speakers. Too many people put in nice decks, but leave the factory speakers in. It's amazing how big a difference it makes putting in even moderately priced speakers can make.
As for the 'phones, I've got a small pair of Sennheisers I could not be happier with (over the ear, active noise cancelling). For ear buds I've got a pair of Shures that are fantastic. And since a great deal of listening time at home is through the 'phones (those of you married to less than enthusiastic partners will understand), having quality reproduction is a must.

These are the best cheap headphones you can buy with a lifetime guarantee (I'm on my 2nd pair). Perhaps not as good as the expensive ones you referenced, but they sound pretty amazing to me.

I've also had Koss in the past that I've been very happy with. Very good value. On the ones I have now, they aren't as much as the Bose; in fact considerably less. Maybe not quite as good overall, but still outstanding.
